THE CHURCH & THE RISEN LORD
“Every Last Tear”

Revelation 7:9-17

Introduction

Following the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, the message of our Lord, the Messiah/Savior began to spread. Peter, James and John and the disciples began to preach and teach wherever they went. Within one generation, there were new Christians, followers of the Christ throughout the mid-east, northern Africa and southern Europe.
What we know as the New Testament began to take shape as the four Gospels and apostolic letters were written and circulated. Apostle and Pastor John’s letter to the seven churches became the book of Revelation. He wrote about visions of judgment and salvation to both challenge and comfort the people of God as faith in Jesus Christ as Lord pushed against Roman rule and the world’s value system. For many years now, the church had been praying, “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” And they meant it.

THE CROSS & RESURRECTION
“Facing the Future”

Matthew 28:1-10; I Peter 1:3-9

Introduction

Following the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, the apostle Peter begins his letter to the early church bursting with delight. Look at the words packed into the first paragraph of this New Testament gem. “Praise… new birth… living hope… greatly rejoice… glory and honor… an inexpressible and glorious joy!” Why? Because out of the serious crisis of Jesus’ betrayal and arrest, the devastating horror of the beatings and crucifixion, after Peter’s disappointing denial and the disciples abandonment, Jesus, the Messiah-Savior rose again from the dead.

THE CROSS
“Facing One Another”

Ephesians 4:22-5:2

Introduction

The Latin communitas (“to come together with a gift) is where our English word community finds its origin. Community is defined with one another where there is a feeling of social equality, solidarity, and togetherness as we give and receive the gifts of friendship. In a 1986 study, four elements of this "sense of community" were identified: membership, influence, fulfillment of needs, and shared emotional connection.

THE CROSS
“Facing Temptation”

Hebrews 4:12-16

Introduction

There are temptations of many kinds in life from the miniscule with little meaning to enormous with life changing possibilities. Shall I have another piece of chocolate cake, knowing where those calories are going to end up? Keeping an eye out for police, shall I go 5, 10, 20 miles an hour over the speed limit just to get there on time or a few minutes earlier, knowing how greater speed increases risk?

THE CROSS
“Facing Our Sins”

Romans 3:1-23

Introduction

In the 1991 film Grand Canyon, an immigration lawyer named Mac (played by Kevin Kline) finds himself at the mercy of potential muggers when his expensive car breaks down in a bad part of Los Angeles late at night. The teenage muggers who favor expensive guns and sneakers are talked out of victimizing Mac by Simon (played by Danny Glover), a tow truck driver. He arrives just in time and gives them a great five-sentence speech on metaphysics, the traditional branch of philosophy concerned with explaining the fundamental nature of being and the world. He says, “Man, the world ain’t supposed to work like this.

SONGS THAT HAVE SHAPED MY LIFE
“They Will Know” and “You Alone”

I Peter 2:4-10

Introduction

On the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, I am an ISTJ. This personality inventory offers an understanding of how we are “wired” from birth and how we develop what works best for us in life. The MBTI is based on Swiss psychologist Carl Jung’s theory of type. I am an Introvert (meaning I find strength and renewal with the interior life). I tend to keep things inside. But when it comes to music, there have been many times when the inside emotions just overflow and spill out
