“Knowing the Good Shepherd”

Psalm 23; John 10:9-18

Introduction

Remember the ad from the ’70s and ’80s? “When E.F. Hutton talks, people listen.” Not anymore. That brokerage house has been defunct for a quarter-century and was briefly part of the old Lehman Brothers empire.  Brands of various goods and services spend so much time and money getting into our psyches.

“Starting From Here”

I John 4:7-12; Luke 24:36b-47

Introduction

Okay… so Jesus came… he lived and died and rose again… “ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God.”  So what? What now? We have the fortune and the misfortune of living in 21st century America: fortunate because we live on this side of the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the countless blessings of a culture founded on biblical principles; unfortunate because it’s old news.

Life Shaped by the Risen Christ

Isaiah 25:6-9; 1 Peter 1:13-21

Introduction

This past week we moved through the annual observance and celebration of Holy Week. And now it’s Easter Sunday. In a compact week, we experienced the Word of God in Person and in Scripture as Jesus gave his life for the salvation of all those who trust in him as Savior and Lord. So, how does the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus shape your life?

“The Seven Not So Deadly Alternatives: Contentment”

Mark 11:7-10; John 6:25-37

Introduction

Palm Sunday is the beginning of what the church has known for centuries as “Holy Week.” This is a real-time re-play of the final week in the life and ministry of Jesus. From the triumphal entry to money changers driven from the Temple to foot-washing and Last Supper to Jesus’ arrest, beatings and execution to the empty tomb and the shocking message of resurrection, we run the gamut of the highest of the highs and lowest of the lows.

“The Seven Not So Deadly Alternatives: Generosity”

Psalm 40:5-8; Luke 12:13-21

Introduction

One writer in the Salt Lake Tribune said it this way: “Walking through the new City Creek Center for the first time, it’s difficult not to be impressed... The stores are as shiny as new dimes, displaying racks of clothing, cases of jewelry and shelves of various products. Some of the pricier stores feel more like movie sets, not showing off merchandise so much as creating a fantasy world – showing you what your life could be like if you bought the contents within.”
As we home in on another of the seven not-so-deadly alternatives, we come to one of our culture’s driving forces: the G-word, Greed.

“The Seven Not So Deadly Alternatives:  Patience”

Numbers 22:21-34; Ephesians 4:1-6

Introduction

From my childhood, it was Mr. Ed. “A horse is a horse, of course, of course; And no one can talk to a horse of course; That is, of course, unless the horse is the famous Mr. Ed.” Now in the era of CG movie making, we have Shrek, Puss in Boots, Kung Fu Panda, and The Lorax. Don’t you just love animals that talk?

“The Seven Not So Deadly Alternatives:  Kindness”

Psalm 22:23-28; Ephesians 2:1-10

Introduction

My mom celebrated her 22nd birthday last week. That’s right. She has had only 22 birthdays. Born on leap year, February 29th, 1924, she really turned 88.
