COME, LORD JESUS
'Come to Raise Us Up'

Isaiah 40:1-5; 2 Corinthians 4:1-18

 Introduction

Advent and Christmas have always been seasons filled with mixed emotions and thoughts, feelings and experiences, for me.  On one hand, to receive a special gift from someone you love is one of life’s treasures. On the other hand, quickly buying something for a person on your list when you have no idea what to get, especially under last-minute pressure - that’s no fun at all.

COME, LORD JESUS
'Come to Set Us Free'

Isaiah 42:1-7; John 8:12-20, 31-36

Introduction

Throughout the world there is economic uncertainty, growing violence, and moral ambiguity. These are the days in which we live. It seems that more than ever, the Christian community (the church) needs to seek and practice the presence of Jesus Christ.

COME, LORD JESUS
'Come to Give Us Hope'

Matthew 24:36-44; Hebrews 6:13-20

 Introduction

Frank Capra directed the classic holiday film It’s a Wonderful Life with Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed. I’m sure it will be shown many times this season on TV. Before he died in 1991, he was asked about the central message of his great work.

'Faith For All Seasons'

Introduction

Today we complete again the liturgical year with “Christ the King” Sunday. So, this morning I thought it would be good to walk through the entire Christian Year together in a teaching-worship service.  In doing so, we have reminded each other of the highlights of our faith as celebrated in our worship.

'In Times of Distress'

Introduction

Mrs. Charles E. Cowman worked as a pioneer missionary with her husband in Japan and China from 1901 to 1917. Out of her experiences and trials arose a now classic daily devotional book Streams in the Desert. Taking a break from writing this sermon, I read this one Thursday afternoon:

'Don’t Let Them Hijack Your Faith'

Luke 19:1-10; Hebrews 11:1-12:2

Introduction

Today is Halloween, one of my favorite and one of my least favorite holidays. It’s a good thing for children to dress up and make believe. A cowboy or fireman, a princess or a Queen of Hearts.

'Grace is Amazing… Really Amazing!'

Psalm 23; John 1:1-17

“From Abracadabra to Zombies.” This internet site lists internet offers that seem too good to be true. First off, you will find the straightforward chain letter scam. You send one dollar to each of the five names listed. And you are promised, "Follow these instructions EXACTLY and in 20 - 60 days you will have received well over $50,000 cash in the mail." How could anyone pass this one up?

'The Grace of Giving'

Psalm 119:97-103; II Corinthians 9:6-15

Introduction

Years ago there was a small town with one bank and three churches. Early one Monday morning, the bank called all three churches with the same request: “Could you bring in Sunday’s collection right away? We’re out of $1 bills.” Jokes, comments, misunderstandings, and quips abound regarding the church and money.
