'In Times of Distress'

Introduction

Mrs. Charles E. Cowman worked as a pioneer missionary with her husband in Japan and China from 1901 to 1917. Out of her experiences and trials arose a now classic daily devotional book Streams in the Desert. Taking a break from writing this sermon, I read this one Thursday afternoon:

'Don’t Let Them Hijack Your Faith'

Luke 19:1-10; Hebrews 11:1-12:2

Introduction

Today is Halloween, one of my favorite and one of my least favorite holidays. It’s a good thing for children to dress up and make believe. A cowboy or fireman, a princess or a Queen of Hearts.

'Grace is Amazing… Really Amazing!'

Psalm 23; John 1:1-17

Introduction

“From Abracadabra to Zombies.” This internet site lists internet offers that seem too good to be true. First off, you will find the straightforward chain letter scam. You send one dollar to each of the five names listed. And you are promised, "Follow these instructions EXACTLY and in 20 - 60 days you will have received well over $50,000 cash in the mail." How could anyone pass this one up?

'The Grace of Giving'

Psalm 119:97-103; II Corinthians 9:6-15

We’re out of $1 bills.” Jokes, comments, misunderstandings, and quips abound regarding the church and money.

'Keeping a World-Wide Perspective'

John 3:16-21; Acts 1:1-9

 Introduction

“God so loved the world… And you will be my witnesses to the ends of the earth.” Jesus and the people of first century Palestine did have an awareness of the vastness of the world. Certainly not as we have, especially with film and photographs of planet Earth from outer space.

'Small Acts Can Make a Big Splash'

I Corinthians 1:18, 22-27; Luke 13:18-21

Introduction

The New Testament is filled with the amazing teachings of Jesus. As God Incarnate (as Eternal God come into the real time and space of human history) and as Savior-Messiah, Jesus wanted to teach us about the nature of God and his love for us.

'Seeing People Through Christ's Eyes'

I Timothy 2:1-7; Luke 4:14-21

Introduction

When I was growing up, one of my brothers had an intense desire to go to the Air Force Academy. He built dozens of model airplanes, hung them in various formations from the rafters in our unfinished attic. Flying was his dream.

"Love Takes a Detour"

I Timothy 1:12-17; Luke 10:25-37

A week ago Saturday, I led the memorial service for Fran Dixon's family in Bountiful. The service was scheduled for 11 am, so I planned on getting there about 10:30 to meet with family and friends as they arrived.
