For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6 One of the authenticating proofs for the inspiration of the Bible, which at the same time authenticate the claims of Jesus Christ as the Son of God and the only Savior of the world, are the many fulfilled prophecies which find their fulfillment in the person and life of Christ, Jesus of Nazareth.
This short two sentence verse from Isaiah talks about what has been and what will be. “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given” speaks about Jesus’ first coming. He is a child of man and the Son of God. “The government will be on his shoulders” speaks of Jesus’ second coming when He will rule the world. The second sentence gives four titles Jesus will wear. “As Wonderful Counselor, the coming Son of David will carry out a royal program what will cause all the world to marvel. As Mighty God His divine power as a warrior is stressed. As Everlasting Father He will be an enduring, compassionate provider and protector. As Prince of Peace His rule will bring wholeness and well-being to individuals and to society.” Through this simple, yet powerful verse, we can revel at what has been and look to the future at what will be.
